Comfort in Christ

Hi, friends! Welcome back to the blog – I’m so happy you’re here!

Over the past couple weeks I’ve been thinking a lot about comfort. About where we find it, what truly provides it, and how often we can get it.

Temporary comfort and solace can definitely come from a lot of different places, but true and lasting comfort comes only from God. To take a closer look at how this works, I found the places that the word ‘comfort’ shows up in the Bible. 2 Corinthians 1:3-4 is one instance that stood out to me for its clarity about both the where and why of comfort. It says,

“Blessed be the God and Father of our Lord Jesus Christ, the Father of mercies and God of all comfort, who comforts us in all our affliction, so that we may be able to comfort those who are in any affliction, with the comfort with which we ourselves are comforted by God.”

So, when we are saved by God, and are part of His family, we can always feel safe and comforted by the truth of what He’s done for us. And, because of the unlimited access we have to that comfort, we can be used by God as a comfort to others in our lives, which is such a sweet blessing.

Because I know that sometimes it’s easily forgotten and we need to be reminded, here are three ways to find comfort in Christ:

Ask the Lord for His comfort. Make the time to pray. Sometimes I let the fear of not having the right words stop me from praying, but that is the opposite of productive! The Lord knows what is in my heart and on my mind, and he WANTS us to spend time with Him in prayer, so that can free up our minds and hearts to speak to Him freely. ALSO, God uses those around us to comfort us as well. I will be the first to admit that being open and vulnerable is hard, but when I confide in someone who loves God and me, He allows them to be a comfort to me, and that is a precious thing.

Read God’s Word. I know at times when I’m struggling, I can lean toward activities that are more numbing than anything. Things like Netflix, or Instagram, or going out with friends. While none of these are bad things in and of themselves, when they take the place of allowing quiet moments to happen, and sitting and reading the words that God has written for me, then it becomes an issue. 2 Thessalonians 2 is another great passage about comfort that is so encouraging!

Think about what you know the truth to be. When I feel myself in despair or sad or hurt about the way things are, or the difficult circumstances in my life, reminding myself of what I KNOW, is a tremendous comfort. God is in control of all things and He loves me. His plan – though I might not know what it is – is perfect. His timing will be played out 100% of the time, and I need to trust in it (Ps. 119:137 and 119:142).

One of the most important things that I want to stress is that God is faithful (2 Thess. 3:3). I absolutely know that things will be so hard sometimes and that comfort will seem far away, and it isn’t that God won’t give us anything that we can’t handle. However, when a situation is too much for us to handle, God will give us the strength to carry on and have courage.

I hope that God encourages you today, and that you feel you can call on Him all the time.

Thank you so much for reading, and be sure to let me know if any of this was helpful!

Until next time! xx
